Sport is a competition, Music Isn't!

Sport by nature has rules and regulations built into the platform such as scores, timers, penalties etc. Music is all subjective to taste, you cannot measure talent or songwriting on a numerical scale. So why does the mainstream media insist on creating the success of musicians by a competition?

This is more than the X Factor, it is based on people's conceptions that a musician is not deemed successful until he she is on TV or in the charts. It creates tension between musical friends, why can't musicians be happy about when others are successful, its all because of the competitive element which leads to jealousy and bitterness. Sure small amounts of rivalry can be good to improve the quality of performances but I would like to live in a world where music is celebrated for it's diversity and not who gets voted in at a mass talent show which I feel like we are heading.

As long as musicians and singers keep feeding themselves into the 'X Factor machine' they keep it alive.
